2004 Recipients of the Fogarty/Ellison Overseas Fellowships in Global Health and Clinical Research Training

The Fogarty International Center (FIC), with support from The Ellison Medical Foundation (EMF), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), has initiated a one year clinical research training opportunity for outstanding graduate level U.S. students in the health professions who have a strong interest in and potential for a career in international health and/ or clinical research. This unique opportunity, designated the Fogarty/ Ellison Overseas Fellowship in Global Health and Clinical Research Training, provides selected students with a one-year, mentored clinical research training experience at an established NIH-funded research center in a developing country and provides funds to support graduate level research activities including a fellowship stipend for a graduate student at the foreign research training site. Fourteen sites which met stringent criteria for research training were selected for the initial fellowship year: Botswana, Brazil, Haiti, India(2), Kenya, Mali, Peru(2), South Africa(2), Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia.

The program is administered by the AAMC and ASPH, which organized the application process and the initial selection of finalist candidates. The applicant pool was outstanding both in quality and quantity and the initial selection process was highly competitive. Twenty-nine finalists accepted invitations to the NIH campus on March 15 and 16, 2004 to participate in a rigorous two-day interview/selection meeting with program site representatives. As a result of these sessions, an inaugural group of twenty students were matched to the fourteen foreign sites. Successful U.S. applicants and developing country partners are:
